Years ago I used to buy computer magazines and play all the demos on the cover disks as a form of cheap entertainment. One day there was a demo of a game called Tomb Raider. I'd never heard of it, and back then I used to try them all out since it was a lot cheaper than going and buying a game and discovering it sucked. Anyway, I played that demo over, and over, and over. I'd never played such a fun game, and back then it had nothing to do with the main character cos the graphics weren't as good as they are today, but the game play was outstanding. I've been a fan of the series ever since.

What always annoys me is that Tomb Raider was one of the most original, and now most copied, 3D games out there, but ofcourse, the screen saver on the official site is just another boring slideshow. YAWN.

So since the new movie sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life is about to be released I decided to do a screen saver, and I think it's come out pretty well. I made the model of Lara myself, but I have to give credit to the people who wrote some modeling tutorials which I can't find again. They helped me out. I also have to give credit to Nehe (nehe.gamedev.net) who has the best OpenGL tutorials on the planet on his website. I used the rope physics tutorial to work out how to made her ponytail move properly.

So she walks around a maze, which is random generated which I think is kinda cool, looking at pictures on the walls that are from the movie. You kind of have to see it to appreciate it, like most of the others. I've never seen anything like it. I had heaps more ideas for this, but didn't really have time to do them all. I wanted to release it before the movie came out. If I get a good response I might come back and add to it later.

I in no way claim that this is anything more than a completely hopeless representation of Lara Croft. I don't claim that it looks anything like her in anyway. SO DON'T BOTHER COMPLAINING. Complaining about free software has been discovered to be the most common cause of Monkeypox! You have been warned.

Now this is what I'd call a really quick release. Just before the X-Men sequel started it cinemas I started getting emails about my old X-Men screensaver that I did when the original movie came out. Turns out people still use it and like it! It's 3 years old now and it was a rush job way back then, but the effect does still look cool.

What I was trying to do back then was do an effect like the map table they used in the first movie. And altho the result didn't really look anything like it, it was still kind of cool to look at. Most people, including me, thought it actually looked like ice sculptures or something.

So the day before X2 was due for release here I had an idea for an updated version of the screensaver. I'd do basically the same thing, but this time have the ice form in the palm of a hand. It was Iceman's mutant abilities that gave me the idea. There's a scene in the first movie where he forms a rose out of ice on Rogue's desk in class. So I thought that might look cool.

What made me want to do it most was that I wanted to make a 3D hand, and I think it came out pretty well. I scanned my hand and then used it as a guide to make a 3D model. Ofcourse I'm left handed, so without thinking I made a left hand. So Iceman is now left handed. So there.

This is very rushed. It's far from the best thing I've ever done, but I still think it looks cool enough to release. It's well worth having a look at just for the wiggling handy-ness.

Release Notes (v1.1):
Happy to say that this little screen saver has been hugely popular. Glad you all like!

This is just a minor update changing a few little things. I fixed one small bug with the settings screen and power saving. I had a few emails asking for the ship movements to be less linear (they rotated at a constant speed). So I changed that. I might change it again but I think it does look better. And I thought of a different way to do the Hyperspace effect, so I rewrote that. I think it looks cool.

And its all still only a 230k download!!

Well I've wanted to do this one for as long as I can remember. But I was never sure I'd get it to work the way I wanted.

Anyway afew weeks back I decided I'd give it a go and it's turned out better than I expected!

It's by no means finished but I'm starting to think it never will be. I keep thinking of new things to add. So I figured I'd stop and release it as it is now and see if there's any interest. If there is I'll keep on going. Actually I'll probably keep going anyway cos I like it but we'll see what happens.

Just a brief description of what happens: The Rebel ships randomly target Imperial ships then chase 'em round trying to kill them. The Imps do the same to the Rebels. Simple! For the first time tho I've done some basic collision detection, AI and all sorts of behind the scenes stuff that you don't care about, but that I think is pretty damn coool!

Afew things I plan on adding in the future are: Playability (I originally started writing it as a game), more ships (including some Episode 1 and possibly 2 ones), an opening crawl (I've done it afew too many times now tho), better collision detection (sometime ships go thru each other), better AI (ships shoot blindly so they sometime hit their comrades), better spawning (sometimes ships appear from nowhere), different scenarios, etc, etc, etc.

If you use/like/hate/choke on/spot bugs in/thoroughly enjoy this screen saver drop me an email!

But before you email with a complaint (Whats that I hear you say?? Complain about free software?! Yup its true I get heaps of complaints!) about the Falcon not looking right or Imperial pilots not flying in proper formation or something please remember: I am just one dude. Doing this stuff in my own time. Getting no money or anything in return. Paying huge website hosting fees so that you can download it.

Basically I am not I.L.M. So don't expect perfection... yet.

can't believe it's been a year and a month since I released this! In that time I've had heaps of emails asking for different currencies and even more emails saying "Gee wouldn't it be cool if all that money was real!"

So anyway I thought it was time I did an update. I've added the most requested currency: Pounds. (Sorry to all the folks living in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and anywhere else that Pounds Stirling is used, but I've used the Bank of England note designs) I've also added new scans of all the Euro's because the ones I used last time were prototypes from before the Euro was in circulation and there's a few slight differences. On top of that I've put in the 200 and 500 Euro notes instead of just the 5,10,20,50 and 100. Apart from all that I've just made some behind the scenes changes that no one will ever notice.

If you want another currency added email me and let me know! I'm willing to add any that I get enough requests for.

Ages ago now I did the old Voyager screensaver, some people liked it, some people complained about it. But even tho it looks a bit old now, I still think it was kind of cool.

But because of problems with Star Trek fans complaining to me about it I decided to stop working on it.

Then late last year I did a new one with the new Enterprise (or old one depending on how you look at it) from the Enterprise series. I did it simply because I liked the series.

This time tho I don't think I got a single complaint. Maybe whatever I'd done "wrong" on the Voyager one I'd managed to fix, or maybe in the time between Star Trek fans had mellowed a bit. Whatever it was I was glad to get some nice emails from Star Trek fans for a change.

I didn't plan on updating the Enterprise 3D Screensaver since there wasn't really anything I could see that needed doing to it. It was nice as it was. But recently I had some wierd-ass virus that gave me skull cracking headaches and I needed something simple to take my mind off it. So what I did was sit down and make some new ship models that were easy to plug into the Enterprise screensaver.

And this is what I've come up with. Rather than updating the Enterprise screensaver I've made a new one that's based on the same kind of thing. The difference is that you can select which ship you want to warp around, or have a random one each time it starts.

At the moment there are just 3 ships, each a different generation of Enterprise: Enterprise NX-01, NCC-1701A and NCC-1701D. All of them look pretty cool if you ask me, so I hope you enjoy them. Since doing the Voyager screensaver I've received requests for me to do a screensaver for all sorts of different ships, but I had hardly any for any of the Kirk era Enterprises. That really surprised me since I thought it was a cool looking ship. So since I was doing ships I wanted to see and not what other people wanted I did the A first, and I think it came out well.

I may or may not add more ships if I get time between other projects. But what they'll be or when, I do not know. Because I've had problems with rabid Star Trek fans in the past I'm just going to say that I don't want suggestions. I'll add whatever ships I decide I want to, if I ever decide to add any. Maybe one day I'll add some sort of battles between ships, but again, don't hold your breath. I don't mean to be nasty, but you have the crazy Star Trek fans who bombarded me with abusive complaints about Voyager to thank for it.

It must be over 18 months since I released the first verion of the old Lord of the Rings 3D Screensaver. Back then there was hardly any interest in it, I guess I released it to early. But of course once the movie was released it went nuts.

I always wanted to do a new one for The Two Towers this year, but until recently I hadn't had a chance. Then I realised it was only a couple of months til the movie was out so I stuck it into high gear and started re-writing the old screensaver. While I was doing it I had what I reckon if one of the niftiest ideas I've ever had. And the result is pants changingly nifty. Whatever that means.

What happens is the rings fall as they used to. But I've made time a variable. So randomly time slows down. Then the camera travels thru the stopped rings til it find the One Ring, and there's a picture in it. You really have to see it in motion to get the full effect.

So then to make it a little niftier I made the rings collide with each other as they fall. So they end up bouncing all over the place.

I've also made it more configurable then any other screensaver I've done. There's heaps of options for turning on n off pretty much everything.

The end result is what I reckon is one of the best screensavers I've done. It's kinda simple, yet endlessly watchable somehow.

I downloaded this screensaver today and I can safely say that it gets a good old 5 out of 5!

The "Screensaver brought to you by ...." screen go's away after the first 10 seconds and you are left looking at some great clean 3d matrix code

Download it, it will be running on my PC for a while.. You'll know what I mean then.
